Multiple award winning gospel singer and Globacom ambassador, Sammie Okposo won this year’s Best of Africa category at the biggest South-Africa gospel music awards, SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards. Okposo, the only Nigerian artiste nominated for the awards was declared as the winner on Sunday November 23, 2014 in Durban, South Africa.
The awards which is in its seventh year and has been described as the most prestigious and credible gospel music awards out of Africa held at ICC Arena, Durban. Other respected African gospel artistes in his category include Frank Chimpazi, Shongwe & Khuphuka, Saved Group and Seapour N.
Speaking concerning his award, Sammie said everything about the award is a surprise because even the nomination came as a surprise. “Firstly, I want to thank God for the grace to be alive. No man must rejoice in his own strength. I never knew I was going to win because the other guys in the category are also well respected and talented. This is actually the second time I will be winning Best African Gospel Artiste on South African soil. The first was KORA. I’m grateful”.
The award’s founder and executive producer, Zanele Mbokazi said “Seven is a number of perfection. We thank God, our partners and the Gospel industry at large for helping us to reach this milestone”.
SABC Crown Gospel Music Awards has become a premier event in the calendar of the Gospel music industry in Africa and is playing a role in shaping South African history. Sammie Okposo also performed live at the event.
